BOOK COVER DESIGN

The challenge was to build a complete visual identity for a fictional publishing house. I had to invent the brand name, define its genre, and develop a cohesive design system that could be applied across a variety of titles. The goal was to demonstrate this system through four book covers—two fiction and two non-fiction, plus an additional brand application.
My concept centers on a flexible grid system where the book sizes vary by content, but the spine maintains a consistent width. To keep the focus on the design, I placed all the book information on the spine, leaving the covers to function as patterns inspired by Japanese patterns. For the non-fiction titles, I used structured Genkouyoushi line grids for a formal touch. For the fiction covers, I introduced a more playful energy by filling alternating grid cells with color. This system turns the publisher’s structural logic into a distinct brand signature that invites interaction.
